- Hummingbirds are migratory birds and are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act
- Hummingbirds are only found in North and South America.
- The average lifespan is 3 to 4 years.
- Hummingbirds eat insects, plant nectar and pollen.
(plant nectar is 90% of the hummingbirds diet)
- Hummingbirds consume up to 50% of their body weight in nectar each day.
- Hummingbirds locate their food by site. They have no sense of smell.
- A hummingbirds heart beats about 80 times a second.
- A hummingbirds wings can beat 60 to 200 times per second.
- Hummingbirds rotate their wings in circles. They can fly forward, backwards, sideways and stop in mid air.
